FUN FACTS ABOUT THE CRUSADES
  • There was a children's Crusade which took place in 1212 led by a 12 year old boy called Nicholas.  However, it was not official since it was not blessed by the Pope.

  • The People's Crusade took place in 1096.  The Crusade involved many types of people such as: ordinary women ,children, a few thousand peasants and only some knights. The leader was called Peter the Hermit and he was a monk.
As they were poorly trained , had not much useful weaponry, it was not a very good idea for this group to try to travel long distance. On top of that, they had no idea what they were putting themselves up against. Soon they began to run out of food as well as being exhausted and impatient. These crusaders were also responsible for the brutal slaying of an estimated one-fourth to one-third of the Jewish population along the Rhine river in France and Germany.
Once they had arrived at the Holy land they faced horrible treatment and were slaughtered by the Muslim Turks. It was a very easy, quick victory for the Muslims and the Christians were terribly embarrassed.

It was also known as the... Peasants' Crusade, Paupers' Crusade or the Popular Crusade. As it was not part of the Catholic church it was not an official Crusade and lasted approximately six months.

  • The first Crusade lasted from 1096-1099
  • The Crusades lasted from 1095-1492
  • The third Crusade was also known as the King's Crusade.
